We specialise in traditional paintings by recognised artists working in Cornwall during the 19th and 20th centuries. We are pleased to present our inventory of fine art on this website and lookforward to welcoming you to our newly refurbished gallery and coffee bar in Hayle, Cornwall.
The gallery originally opened as Sims Gallery, in 1998, specializing in traditional Newlyn and Modern British. In 2001, the gallery became known as Market House under the auspices of Jonathan Grimble,who brought many modern and contemporary artists to further prominance. The gallery aims to present around 6 exhibitions each year, of both one-person and group shows. We carry an extensive stock of drawings, watercolours, oils, sculpture, retro ceramics and glassware.
The development of Western philosophy during the last two centuries has succeeded in isolating the mind in its own sphere and in severing it from its primordial oneness with the universe. A graduate of Goldsmiths' College, London, Amanda pioneered a technique for combining fabrics such as silks, satins and velvets to form richly coloured textile collages. These dynamic artworks varywith changing light continually presenting a fresh experience to the viewer. Widely travelled, the artist lived on San Juan Island in Washington State for ten years. Having returned to Cornwall she continues selling her work internationally both to private and corporate clients.

I was born in Cornwall and have been drawn towards Art and creative subjects ever since attending primary school. I naturally pursued this passion through my secondary school years in the southwest,and it wasn't until I attended Truro College that I became drawn toward the design elements. This led me to study interior design at the university of North London. Whilst studying my degree course I achieved a greater understanding of the drawn line, position and perspective.
Located in the Downalong area of St Ives and in the former premises of Stevens Fish Shop, Back Road Artworks is an exciting new venture - a large, inviting studio space where eight artists permanentlyshow their paintings but which also offers visitors the opportunity to see them at work.
Kerris, could not be more Cornish, he was born and raised in the Duchy, and has remained there throughout his working life. He won a scholarship to Penzance School of art at the age of 14, where hestudied a wide range of subjects including pottery under Michael leach, son of the celebrated Bernard Leach of St. Ives.

The gold, occasionally copper, used for decorative fine lines and marks are often the distinctive signs of a painting or collage of an Angela Diggle work. A collage using hydrangea heads or a catlooking out to watch a fantastic sunset from the safety of a window ledge may glisten with gold touches and the poppies which often feature in her paintings can be outlined in gold. Angela thinks the the fascination for gold is something to do with being a "dragon" in the Chinese horoscope?
